Magazine Design

This assignment challenged me to create a comprehensive magazine layout focused on the principles of design. The task involved designing key elements such as the cover, index, content pages, masthead, and articles, all centered around the theme of design fundamentals.

For my concept, I chose to incorporate basic design elements like dots, lines, and box layouts—symbols of structure and balance in design.

The final result is a vibrant, square-shaped magazine packed with dynamic layouts, light patterns, and eye-catching visuals that bring the principles of design to life.

The classic “design a magazine” task. Easy, right? Well, not when you have to do EVERYTHING. The assignment was to take a block of text about the principles of design and turn it into a full-fledged magazine. This meant creating the cover, index, content pages, masthead, articles, and, of course, making it look like a professional piece of work—no pressure.
To keep it simple, I chose the basic elements of design: dots, lines, and boxes. They’re the building blocks of everything, right? So I figured why not base my entire magazine on them? I also decided to throw in my college’s primary colors because, hey, why not make the assignment look like It belongs to a specific institution—no one would guess I was too lazy to come up with a new palette.
Now the real fun began. I had to take all those dots, lines, and boxes and create a cohesive layout that didn’t look like a kindergarten project. I chose a square shape for the magazine because rectangles are too mainstream, right? With vibrant, light colors and dynamic patterns, I set out to make this design look like something you’d actually want to flip through (not just toss on the coffee table for decoration). Of course, I had to make sure that the layout was not only visually appealing but also functional, because we all know how much fun it is to design something that’s completely useless.
Once I wrapped up the layouts and slapped on the final touches, I printed it out, stood back, admired my outcome, and realized that I’d just made something that actually looked like a magazine you could read without your eyes bleeding!
